The Travel Wardrobe I Wish I'd Packed (And How I Help Women Avoid My Biggest Style Mistake)

travel Jun 29, 2026

Some outfits simply don't work.

We've all had those days.

The sweater itches. The waistband pinches. The proportions feel off. We spend the day tugging, adjusting, and counting the minutes until we can change.

The good news?

Tomorrow is a do-over.

Most outfits get a second chance.

Travel photos don't.

They become the permanent record of a memory. Not because we're chasing the perfect Instagram feed, but because photographs have become our modern scrapbook. They capture how we felt standing in front of a cathedral, sailing across turquoise water, or walking through a city we've dreamed about for years.

A photo isn't just an image.

It's a timestamp of wonder.

And what you're wearing becomes part of the story.

My Biggest Style Regret

One of the most cherished trips of my life was a visit to Paris with Fashion Group International around the year 2000.

One stop remains burned into my memory:

29 Rue Cambon.

Chanel.

The mirrored staircase.
The apartment.
The library.
The rooms only a fortunate few get to see.

Young, free, and completely unprepared, I treated packing as an afterthought.

And what did I wear?

A plain black shift with a pink pashmina.

That's it.

No pearls.
No brooch.
No lipstick.
No bow.
No sense of occasion.

When I look at the photo today, I don't see Chanel.

I see a missed opportunity.

Not because I wasn't fashionable enough.

Because I wasn't intentional enough.

Had I understood then what I know now about personal style, that photograph would tell a completely different story.

What I Know Now

What we wear matters.

Not because fashion is important.

Because we are.

I've learned that:

  • Your clothing affects your confidence and posture.
  • Your outfit communicates before you ever speak.
  • If you're uncomfortable, you'll look uncomfortable.
  • Great outfits create stronger emotional memories.
  • A thoughtful packing plan frees up energy to enjoy the trip itself.
  • Styling isn't just about the clothes. It's about creating harmony between you and the environment around you.

A woman in a red swimsuit against the white buildings and blue sea of Greece.

A deep green cover-up against tropical foliage.

A flowing dress moving with the ocean breeze.

Those images tell a story.

Enter Sarah's Cruise Wardrobe

When Sarah asked for help packing for a cruise, I immediately thought about Chanel.

Not because she was going to Paris.

Because I wanted her photos to feel the way I wish mine did.

Intentional.

Confident.

Beautiful.

Her trip deserved that.

And so did she.

Travel Day

We started with what most people overlook: the journey.

Comfort matters.

But comfort and style are not mutually exclusive.

Sarah's travel outfit combined wrinkle-resistant ponte pants with a soft cashmere sweater in a palette of camel and sky blue—a color story inspired by the sand and sea she was about to experience.

The result?

Comfortable enough for airports.

Elegant enough to start the trip feeling like herself.

Embarkation Day

Cruise embarkation days are deceptively tricky.

Your luggage may disappear for hours.
You're moving between air conditioning and sunshine.
You need flexibility.

We built an outfit that could easily transition into poolside mode once her cabin was ready.

Easy.
Comfortable.
Beautiful.

Building a Color Story

Every successful travel wardrobe has a point of view.

For Sarah, it started with a floral wrap that blended soft blues, camel, burgundy, and earthy neutrals.

That single piece became the anchor.

From there, everything worked together.

Forest green.
Burgundy.
Sky blue.
Warm sand tones.

Every item mixed and matched effortlessly.

No orphan pieces.

No suitcase clutter.

Dressing for the Moment

The dinner dresses were showstoppers.

One highlighted her feminine silhouette with a romantic asymmetrical hem.

Another—a deep navy dress—pushed her slightly beyond her comfort zone.

The response from her husband?

Exactly what you'd hope.

Sometimes the right dress doesn't just change the photo.

It changes how you experience the evening.

The Postcard Effect

One of my favorite looks from the trip was a simple excursion outfit.

Nothing overly fancy.

Just the right colors.
The right silhouette.
The right setting.

The result looked like something from a travel magazine.

Not because the clothes were expensive.

Because the entire picture worked together.

Sarah belonged in the scene.

Why Travel Wardrobes Matter

A thoughtful travel wardrobe isn't about vanity.

It's about presence.

When you know what you're wearing works, you stop thinking about your clothes and start paying attention to the sunset, the architecture, the conversation, the ocean.

You become fully available for the experience.

And years later, when you look at the photographs, you remember exactly how it felt to be there.

Not what you wish you had worn.

What you actually loved wearing.

Unlike my Chanel photo.
