What to Buy for Fall 2026: A Personal Stylist’s Guide to Shopping the Trends Without Overbuying
Sep 08, 2026Fall Style Like You’ve Never Seen Before
Welcome Fall!
Maybe it’s a little early to grab a pumpkin spice latte and put the pool noodles away? But the days are numbered, the light is at a different angle, there’s a nip in the air, and a sprinkling of golden yellow leaves. The September issue is printed. Burgundy and plaid are in the stores. Fall trend emails are piling up in the inbox. Are you jumping in?
Instead of another list of what fashion says you “need” this fall, here’s how I decide what’s actually worth bringing into your closet.
It’s not that I’m not excited for Fall Fashion as a stylist (I do make a small commission from clothes my clients purchase), but Fall Fashion is designed for you to buy heavy at retail. The sales, the catalogs, the sights, smells, and sounds. It’s a time where we can literally layer on the products! Jackets over shackets over a tee plus a hat and maybe a scarf.
But…for me and my clients, it just doesn’t quite feel like a fall haul type of season. It’s kinda like drinking a PSL as a type 2 diabetic, enjoy a sip or two, but skip the Venti. Be responsib-haul.
Here’s my thoughts on Fall Fashion 2026:
Fall Fashion is a brand’s POV.
Fall Style is YOUR POV.
I’m over here having a plain latte, hopefully helping you decipher the gap between the two views with the least amount of fall fashion friction (getting dressed stress, decision fatigue, budget, wearability, misses, overspending).
Here’s my fab four points to ponder on what to buy this season:
1. What do you really need?
Start with your calendar. We can easily get caught up in the autumn vibe and see ourselves in cute flannels and boots, walking through a pumpkin patch, and forget that it’s still 90 degrees outside. It’s easy to overbuy with pumpkin patch passion when we don’t do the style math: how many times do I actually have the opportunity to wear this? Get specific. Calculate your coffee dates, pumpkin parties, school events, dinners, etc. from now until Thanksgiving. Estimate the number of times you will wear that dress, and divide into the cost. This gives you an idea of wearable worth.
Shop your closet first. Pop into that beautiful boutique we call a wardrobe. I bet there is something in there that you can play with for the dates in your day planner. Of course you don’t want your family pictures to be in the same outfit every year, but grab a coffee have a play date in your closet and make a scene! Try things on while those endorphins are excited! Get out your outfit recipes along with your crockpot PSL copycat brew. Make a list of anything you NEED to complete the looks.
P.S. (Pumpkin Spice Style): It’s also a great time to get rid of a few things that no longer serve you.
2. Have you seen anything that you really, really want?
I mean REALLY want. Butterflies in your stomach. Can’t stop thinking about. Obsessed. It is soooooo YOU. That ONE thing.
Yes, this is a pumpkin passionate purchase also. (actually most purchases are emotional), but I really mean it when I say this needs to be the LOVE of your fall season 2026.
October odds are that when you purchase from the heart, there will be plenty you already own that will work with that new love. We tend to deeply love a particular style. Buyer beware: if you have to buy three more items to make an outfit, let’s walk on by for now.
3. Take Note of the Trends
Here is the secret to tapping into trends beautiFALLy: trends indicate what is available to purchase right now. Right now means brands put this trend color or silhouette in their line temporarily. For a season or two, depending on how it sells.
First know yourself, and your style: what silhouette frames your beautiful body: big blazers or moto jackets or soft sweaters. Curate your color palette: are your eyes muted or bright, cool or warm? Does your personality lean romantic or dramatic? Of course I can help if you are having trouble defining these unique-to-you features, but at least have an idea of what works for you before you fall into a trend.
Then look at a trend report or two. Do any of the trends meet your body-color-style criteria? Is there anything in there that has been on your wish list for a while? That’s your go ahead to explore what the trend looks like from fashion’s POV and translate it into something that works for you.
An example this season is the Royal Purple trend. Brands do not sell purple very often, so if you are a Winter (this is a cool/bright color), take a look at how the trend looks in reports, in designer outfits. Is it used solid in wild, modern, designer shapes, or creatively mixed with unpredictable colors and patterns? If those looks are elements of your style archetype, then move forward into browsing retail. This is probably the time to pick up the perfect purple piece.
4. My Moderation Method
Path A: If you have a carefully curated working wardrobe, maybe all you need is one versatile piece: colored denim, cardigan, frayed flannel or jewel toned track pant. Pick one. Preferrably from your obsessions wish list. Get dressed for a week, and if you mentally reach for that particular piece, it’s the one to pick and take home.
Path B: If you don’t have a carefully curated working wardrobe, try buying a mini capsule, keep it separated from the rest of your clothes and pull from your closet into it.
Two tops. Two bottoms. Two Third Layers = 16 outfits without changing the accessories.
That’s enough for one month, only repeating each outfit one time.
Then if you add in one bottom, two tops, and one third layer from your closet, you get 48 outfits without changing accessories and shoes, which is enough to cover you until Thanksgiving.
